  • An unidentified vessel, registered in Norway and with King Harald, the Norwegian King of the Isle of Man, England on board, wrecked in the Sumburgh Roost, south of Sumburgh Head.
    Due to the importance of it's passenger, this vessel and this incident are known in some quarters by the term "King Harald's boat".
    There is some suggestion that this incident occured instead in 1248, but the concensus of opinion supports 1242 as being the date.
