- Three French warships entered Bressay Sound, burned Lerwick, Fort Charlotte, and much of the Dutch herring buss fleet lying at anchor in the harbour. Up to 400 busses are understood to have been destroyed.
Some records place this incident as having occured in the first half of 1703, but the majority concensus of opinion agree on it having been 1702.
- An unidentified full rigged ship, registered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands wrecked at an unspecified location in Dunrossness.
- William Hunter of Lunna, the second Hunter of Lunna House, dies unmarried, and was succeeded by his younger brother Thomas.

The vessel Elizabeth (1702), laden with a cargo of meal, wrecked at an unspecified location on or near Shetland no later than this date. All of the crew were saved.
