  • The Pirate, a novel based largely in Shetland by Sir Walter Scott is published in Edinburgh and London
  • A Description of the Shetland Islands: comprising an account of their geology, scenery, antiquities and superstitions by Samuel Hibbert is published
  • The number of ponies was estimated at 10,000, of which 1000 were found in Unst.
  • The Vandrandande Man a barque, of and from Gothenberg, Sweden wrecked on the Head of the Landberg, Fair Isle.

March

  • 6th
    *The Earl Spencer, a sloop operating as a smuggler laden with contraband, of Dover, England drove from anchor and wrecked in either St Ninian's Bay or Bigton Wick. One crewmember was lost.

April

  • The Barbara (1822), a sloop, of and either from or for Lerwick. The crew having been washed overboard and lost in the Sumburgh Roost, was found and taken to the South Harbour, Fair Isle where she subsequently drove from anchor and was wrecked.

November

  • 11th
    The Coldstream. a brig, carrying passengers and a mixed cargo which included horses, of and from Lerwick for Leith, Scotland founder off Sumburgh Head. All aboard perished.
  • 19th
    The Freden, a full rigged ship, laden with a mixed cargo, of and for Gothenberg, Sweden from Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. wrecked near Kirkabister, Bressay having driven ashore and filled with water.
