January

  • An unidentified vessel laden with a cargo of timber persumed foundered near the NE of Shetland. A report by Captain Sinclair of the vessel Lady Ambrosine of and from Lerwick for Haroldswick, Unst, intermediate locations in between, and return, states that on the 3rd the vessel struck an object at a position approx 2 miles S of Burravoe, Yell, persumed to be a floating wreck or wreckage. And on the 4th great quantities of battens and deals were observed floating along the NE coast. Upon return to Lerwick the Lady Ambrosine was beached for inspection, and it was discovered part of her forefoot had been carried away and the gabbard straik partly split.
  • 23rd
    The Veranda, a schooner or brigantine, of either Porsgrund or Drammen, Norway. Having put in to Lerwick Harbour on December 26th 1876 was subsequently lying at anchor near the North Ness, when, during storm conditions on the 23rd, she parted her anchors and drove ashore on a Baa near the Greenhead, and was subsequently declared a total loss.
  • 26th/27th
    The Gem (LK84), a cutter or smack, of Lerwick. While lying at anchor in Vaila Sound she drove ashore on Limekiln Point in heavy weather, and became a total loss.

  • 19th
    The Duncan, a steamship, in ballast, of and from Dundee, Scotland, and for Archangel, Russia, wrecked near South Harbour, Fair Isle during fog. All aboard were saved.

August

September

  • 19th
    The Black Watch, a full rigged ship, in ballast, of Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada, from Bremerhaven, Germany, and for New York, U.S.A. wrecked on the westernmost point of Fair Isle. All of the crew were saved.

October

  • 15th
    The Sapphire, a schooner, of Lerwick, while moored at the quayside at Freefield drove against it, became holed and sank.

November

  • 16th
    The Elwine, a Brig, shipwrecked on Clokkistak, Spiggie, Scousburgh.
