- Firths Voe Lighthouse, (Firth) first lit
- Ness of Sound Lighthouse was first lit.
- The Shetland Collie Club requested Kennel Club recognition but was refused. The Scottish Shetland Sheepdog Club was formed in its place and maintained its own stud book and standard.

- 1st
UK Old Age Pension first introduced. It was means tested and paid two to five shillings weekly to those over 70 years old. (2005 equivalent £6.95 to £17.36 by retail index). Shetland had a high proportion of poor older people and this payment was of enormous benefit.

- 5th
An un-named, wooden hulled sailing vessel, one ton or two tons (the records are in dispute), registered in Hamnavoe, Burra, one crew, foundered at a position approx 0.25 miles SW of Green Holm, Scalloway while in passage from Scalloway to Hamnavoe. The sole occupant perished.
- 11th
The John Nutten (A243), an Aberdeen, Scotland registered steel hulled steam fishing trawler was abandoned to sink at a position approx 18 miles SSW of Fair Isle, after having grounded and been towed off rocks between The Keels and The Skerry, Fair Isle.

- 5th
The Anton De Jong a wooden hulled sail fishing boom registered in The Netherlands, sank approx 600 yards E of the Knab, Lerwick following a collision with the Lowestoft, Suffolk, England registered steam fishing drifter Reaper.

Telephone link between Lerwick and Scalloway established.

The Excelsior, a wooden hulled sailing smack, drove from moorings and was stranded at Sandwick.
