  • 3rd
    Martin Nissen shipwrecked at Coubal, Scousburgh. The cargo of wood was salvaged by local men and later auctioned by Customs. Stories are told of people who came to the auction from outside the district, being persuaded to go home, or at least not bid at the sale.

  • 7th
    Lerwick lifeboat station established, when first motor lifeboat arrives. Lady Jane and Martha Ryland was a 52' Barnet class boat, with twin petrol engines giving a speed of eight to nine knots, depending on the sea state. This boat was at Lerwick station for over 30 years, and visited again in the 1980's as a motor cruiser, re-named 'Cambrae'. The boat is believed to be now in Ireland.

    Sir Robert Stout dies.
