• The Shetland Fiddlers' Society was formed by Dr Tom Anderson.
• The St Clair (III) was built, it was the last non RO-RO ship built for the North Company.
• The St Clair (II) was renamed St Magnus (IV).

• 4th
  Fraserburgh fishing boat, Gleaner, struck on Ness of Sound. Of the two crewmen on board, one was was rescued by the Lerwick Lifeboat "Claude Cecil Staniforth", the other was picked up from a liferaft by another fishing vessel entering Lerwick Harbour Gleaner later drifted across Breiwick and was smashed on the shore to the west of Sletts pier. Divers from the Malakoff yard later salvaged the engine.
