January

  • 1st
    Hurricane force winds cause great damage. Roof blown off a house in Yell, Annsbrae Caravan Park, in Lerwick, flattened, boats destroyed and radar domes at Saxa Vord blown away. Among the boats that were destroyed was the "Faar Haaf", the sixareen replica built by Duncan Sandison on Unst.

April

  • 9th
    General Election, Jim Wallace, Liberal, returned with a majority of 5,033.

August

  • 15th
    The Inverness registered motor fishing vessel Taranis capsized and sank at a position generally to the NE of Shetland.

September

  • A turtle is spotted in the sea north-north west of Muckle Flugga. See here for more detail.

  • 5th
    A turtle is spotted in the sea off Balta in Unst. See here for more detail.
