The Danish barque Alba of Copenhagen, with a general cargo, was wrecked on the Flaeshens of Sandwick on 1st April 1884, in darkness.
Part of a deckhouse lodged on the rocks and this sheltered the four surviving members of the crew of 19 until they were rescued next morning in a hazardous operation by the Whalsay sixareen 'Mary', skippered by John Anderson.
The Danish authorities later awarded Anderson a silver medal which was subsequently donated to the Shetland Museum in 1980.
