Aly Bain
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Dr. Aly Bain MBE born on May 15, 1946 in Lerwick, started playing the fiddle when he was 11, and was tutored by the late Dr.Tom Anderson MBE.
In his early 20s, Aly moved to Scotland and soon found acclaim not only for his musical ability, but also for the passion and great skill with which he played.
Aly was instrumental in the forming of the band Boys of the Lough, and he toured and recorded with them for about 30 years, whilst maintaining a solo career as well.
Aly has traveled extensively, and while bringing his unique brand of traditional music to new audiences, he also has learned the musical styles of other cultures.
In 1988 Aly teamed up with Scots accordionist Phil Cunningham to record a series of programmes for Channel 4 TV. This was the beginning of a great partnership, as Aly and Phil have been touring ever since. The 2007 tour celebrates their 20th anniversary. They also have become a regular feature of the BBC Hogmanay TV shows.
Aly has recorded several albums on his own, as well as with Phil, and with Swedish instrumentalist Ale Möller. All these albums are produced by Aly's own label, Whirlie Records.
