Andrew John Grierson was the sixth child of ten of Reverend James Grierson minister of Tingwall Kirk, the second eldest of at least four, and the second son, by his second wife Elizabeth Greig. He was born on March 21st 1734, baptised on April 25th 1734, and died at sea in March 1766. He married Elizabeth Kelday, born before 1737, youngest daughter of three of John Kelday, merchant in Lerwick and his wife Elizabeth Halcro, on December 16th 1755, they produced seven descendants.

  • James Grierson (1). Born or Baptised May 25th 1759. (The available records are in dispute).
  • Andrew Grierson. Born or Baptised February 19th 1761. (The available records are in dispute). A twin with Anderina Greirson (below). Died before 1764.
  • Anderina Grierson. Born February 19th 1761. Baptised November 16th 1761. A twin with Andrew Grierson (above). Died before 1765.
  • John Grierson. Born or Baptised April 16th 1762 (The available records are in dispute). Died February 14th 1767.
  • Andrew Grierson. Born or Baptised April 20th 1764. Died February 12th or June 30th 1835. (The available records are in dispute).
  • Janet Grierson. Born after 1765. Married James Craigie.

He was a merchant in Lerwick, and subsequently purchased a significant part of the then bankrupt estate of the Sinclair of Quendale family in 1765, and in doing so founded the Grierson of Quendale family Estate. Upon the death of Andrew John Grierson his eldest son James Grierson (1) served as his heir on September 24th 1767. Most of the remainder of the Sinclair of Quendale family Estate was purchased by the Bruce of Sumburgh family at around the same time as Grierson's purchase, and added to their own estate.
