Basil Wishart, Shetland author and journalist, was born at Hillhead, Lerwick on the 19th of September, 1919, the son of a master mariner from Edinburgh, James Smith Wishart, and Helen Bruce (Cissie) Johnson of Lerwick.
Basil Wishart became a long-serving editor of The Shetland Times and commentator on local affairs. He was a popular and influential figure in Shetland in the latter half of the 20thC. He died in Lerwick on 10 February 1997. His Memoirs, edited by his daughter Beatrice Nisbet, were published posthumously in 1997.
