Bonhoga Gallery
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Bonhoga Gallery at Weisdale Mill was the first purpose built gallery in Shetland and the most northerly in the UK with a programme of visual and applied art. It was one of the key early projects in the work of the Shetland Arts Trust and important in that it centred arts policy outwith Lerwick. The gallery opened its doors on 12th April, 1994, since when it has blossomed under the guidance of Mary Smith. The cafe in the south-facing porch has ensured that it has become a very popular place with visitors and locals alike.
The Hatchery Workshop opposite runs a programme of adult and children's art and craft workshops and Bonhoga also has a lively touring programme with shows at Sumburgh Airport, the Leisure Centres in Yell, Unst and Whalsay and the Peerie Shop Cafe, Lerwick.
The gallery housed the Shetland Working Textile Museum and provided a base for Hazel Hughson's groundbreaking work in tradtional crafts.
