The ss Borgfelde was wrecked, 17th July 1888, on Brucie's Baa near Hillswick.
She had just left Hillswick, bound for Hamnavoe, Burra to take on more cargo.
As well as the 3000 barrels of herring on board, there were about 40 gutters who were hitching a lift home from the north mainland stations.
She ran aground at full speed and started to fill with water. Her lifeboat was launched and the women who were on board, assisted by two of the crew reached safety on a nearby skerry.
The sound of the collision had been heard at Hillswick and a trawler with a sixareen in tow went to investigate. They managed to rescue all the crew and passengers.
Some of the cargo was salvaged before the wreck sank.
