Bressay Kirk
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Bressay Kirk was built in 1815. It replaced a kirk built around 1722.
(The 18th century kirk replaced the three ancient chapels in Bressay ; St Mary's Church at Cullingsburgh, St Ola's Church at Gunnista and St John's Chapel at Kirkabister.)
Bressay Kirk has two stained glass windows on the south side, one on either side of the pulpit, one is commemorating Sir Robert Cruickshank, son of one of the ministers, who became Governor of Tasmania, the other is commemorating John Ross, schoolmaster in Bressay from 1843 to 1878.
The Reverend Zachary Macaulay Hamilton, D.D., (born on the 12th January, 1805, and died on the 17th July 1876), was "called" to Bressay in 1833, and had care of the people for 43 years.
At the front of the kirk, there are memorials for both World Wars mounted on the wall.
