On the 4th April 1960, the Fraserburgh fishing boat Gleaner, which had been sheltering from bad weather in Lerwick Harbour, put to sea. After clearing the harbour, she headed straight for the Ness of Sound, and grounded. Of the two crewmen on board, one was rescued by the Lerwick Lifeboat "Claud Cecil Staniforth", the other was picked up from a liferaft by another fishing vessel entering Lerwick Harbour. Gleaner then drifted across Brei Wick and was smashed on the shore to the west of Sletts pier. Divers from the Malakoff yard later salvaged the engine.
