Gordon B. Smith, Master Mariner, born Lerwick in January 1946, Gordon sailed from Lerwick to New Zealand, via Panama Canal, in the 32' yacht "Varangian".

Leaving Lerwick on 4th July 1979, he arrived in Auckland 16 months and 16 days later, having sailed 16,050 miles. His boat, "Varangian" was built at the West Dock in Lerwick in 1960 by James Smith (Boatie Jeemie).

Gordon wrote an account of his adventure in the book Varangian published in 1983 (ISBN No.9509263 0 2)
