Hance D. Smith
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Dr. Hance D. Smith, Shetland-born academic, currently Reader in Earth Sciences at Cardiff University, is the author of a number of books, most notably for Shetlopedians, his Shetland Life and Trade 1550-1914 (Edinburgh, 1984)
In this major study, Smith examines in meticulous detail a wide range of primary sources of information, documenting the social, political, economic and environmental developments and influences which helped to shape life here until the outbreak of the First World War.
Of no less interest is The Making of Modern Shetland, originally published in serial form in The New Shetlander, 1975-1977, and issued in book form by The Shetland Times in 1977.
