Although Shetland is not mentioned in the title Thomson's work is an incredible source of information with lots of details about Shetland not being published elsewhere.
Easy to read although not always easy to follow up with hundreds of footnotes added refering to even more publications. A bit simplified: Any noteworthy publication about the subject published before is considered.
Outdated in some details due to more recent research it is still a unique key to the understanding of the northern isles of Orkney and Shetland their history and social and economic development.
