Hoy is a small island off the west coast of the central Shetland Mainland. It rises to a height of just over 30m and is separated from Strom Ness by the Sound of Hoy. Along the same part of coast the island of Flotta lies 1km north, and the island of North Havra 2km south.
On the west side of Hoy are two smaller skerries, the nearest, and largest is the Hogs of Hoy, and the furthest is the strangely named Junk.
During their research Venables & Venables recorded the following species of birds breeding on Hoy 1945-47.
Regular and common: Starling; Rock Pipit; Wren; Shag; Eider; Oyster Catcher; Common Gull; Herring Gull; Greater Black-backed Gull; Lesser Black-backed Gull; Black Guillemot; Fulmar and Rock Dove.
Irregular or rare: Hooded Crow; Snipe and Arctic Tern.
