Ian Best
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
Ian Best is a boatbuilder based in Fair Isle.
Aged seventeen, he went to Norway to study the trade and became a master of his craft. He built a Ness Yoal in the hall of the old Chambers Street museum, Edinburgh, and has travelled to Iceland and the USA, demonstrating his art.
The Scottish Fisheries Museum has one of his yoals, but the most likely place to see one of his boats is at one of the rowing regattas which are held all over Shetland during the summer months.
