James P. Peterson, or Jim Peterson, Shetland author, was born in 1939. He is a native of Sandness, where he has lived all his life. He was educated at Sandness Primary School, Anderson Educational Institute and the University of Aberdeen, after which he was a primary school teacher in Burra, Brae and Aith.

Jim has been a stalwart of Shetland football as player, coach and historian, and was for many years president of the Shetland Football Association. As a player, he represented Shetland in the Intercounty and over the years he took his beloved Lerwick Spurs on many trips to Faroe, Norway and Scotland.

Jim's meticulous study of the History of Shetland Football, 1887-1987, was published in 1988. He is also joint author of Junior Inter-county Shetland v Orkney 1947-1997: 50th anniversary celebrations : a look back at the first fifty years along with Fiona Black and Jill Hibbert.
