John Campbell, LL.D was born in Edinburgh on March 8, 1708, the son of Robert Campbell of Glenlyon, a scion of the noble house of Breadalbane, and a Berkshire lady who claimed descent from the poet Waller. He earned the degree of LL.D. from the University of Glasgow in 1754. He resided in Shetland for five years. Described as "a candid and intelligent man, well acquainted with the subjects of which he treated, and though not an elegant, a truthful writer". He died at age 68 in London on December 28, 1775.
