History

The church now in use as Lerwick Parish Church - St Columba's Church - is the third church since Lerwick became a parish of it's own in 1701.
The first church was built in the second half of the 17th century, in Queen's Lane, on the place were the Masonic Hall is today. In 1783, a larger church was built around it, and the walls of that church is today a part of the Masonic Hall
The present church was finished in 1829, work started in 1825. It is a large square Georgian building, with a Victorian inteior. It is mostly refered to as Da Muckle Kirk.

Work started on refurbishing the kirk on the 27th of March 2008.
