Teinds Paid from the Parish of Nesting in 1627

The worth and rent of every rowme in the pareis both stok and teynd cannot vtherwayes be knowin bot be the payment of the yeirlie dewties thairof being rentallit of old at a certane rate quhilk is not changeabill Of the quhilkis dewties some are payit to the King yeirlie out of every rowme in the pareis called Skatt and Wattill according to the rentall thairof Mair payit to the King out of the whole parochin ane ox and 12 sheip yeirlie and the rest of the dewties payit to the owners of the ground are grassoums and landmaillis; the grassoums are payit vsually in money and the landmaills in butter and course cloth called wadmell, the butter is weyit to a wecht called a lespund consisting of 24 merkis and the wadmell meisured be a meisuring wand called a cuttell.

  • Of quhilkis landis lyand in the saidis parochies of Nesting, Lunasting, Quhayllsay and Skerries thair is a few kirklandis quhairof some called Provestis landis belonging to [ unknown ] in Norway and possest be William Bruce of Soumbrogh takisman thairof and of these only 7 merkis and a half paying of grassoums 3 lib. of butter, 3 lp. 28 merk of wadmell 3 §. 4 cuttellis and a half of corn teynd, 1 lp. 6 merk butter and 5 cans oylie with the skatt and wattell to the King.
  • Mair of kirklandis called Bishops landis now belonging to the king, 38 merk land lyand in sundry places The grassoums thairof will extend to 15 lib. 4 3. The butter dewtie to about 18 lp. and the wadmell about 28 §. The cornteynd thairof is payit in butter and oylie diverily according to the divers portions of the same with the skatt and wattell to the king. Besyde the foirsaidis manured rowms thair is some small Iles also lying in the sea and serving for pasturage and fishing.
