North Company was the common name for the "North of Scotland, Orkney & Shetland Steam Navigation Co.", which was formed in 1875. Renamed in 1953 as the "North Of Scotland, Orkney & Shetland Shipping Co. Ltd.,
In 1961 the North Company was taken over by "Coast Lines Ltd." which eventually became part of the P & O Group, in 1971.
In October 1975 the North Company became known as "P & O Ferries (Orkney & Shetland)".
