Shalders are common to Shetland. Small flocks like to rest on islets and sandbars between tides. They feed among rocks and on mud-flats.
They can be very noisy, especially their alarm, a strident kleep, kleep. If an enemy (incl. humen) gets too close to their nests and / or chickens the adult birds try to attract all interest from them and to lure the enemy away.
