Shetlopedia:Editing
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia that anyone can edit
Introduction
If you've never edited an article before, then this may help you 'cross the bridge' to making your first edit. There are plenty of other articles out there, for instance click here for a more detailed Wikipedian one, but this article may be less intimidating. Perhaps.
Stage one: You've found an article to edit
Ok, say you've browsed the information avaliable in Shetlopedia about the bustling town of Scalloway.

That's fine you say, I've read about the witches and the local bars, but there's no mention of the Scalloway Castle - it's been forgotten! How do I add it? Well, you need to edit the article.
Stage two: Edit the article
You can either do this either by
- a) clicking on the edit tab at the top of the screen (shown below) which will allow you to edit the entire article at one time;
OR
- b) clicking on one of places where it says edit beside one of the sections headers, if you are just interested in altering one part of the article.

For this example, we'll just click on the edit at the top, to change the whole lot.
Stage three: Changing the text
This can seem a little overwhelming to the newcomer, as what you see here is not exactly the text you saw in the article: there are a few square brackets, and slashes thrown in for good measure. We'll talk about this in a furture article, but we don't need to worry for now, as we're just adding some plain old text. So, find the part we want to add to, moving the Scroll Bar down if necessary to find it.

Where the paragraph ends "...overlooking the village.", I want to add:
Built in 1600 by Earl Patrick Stewart, the remains of Scalloway Castle are still visible.
Stage four: Saving the edit
Once this is entered this my screen looks like this:

As can be seen above, we're about ready to save the changes (shown as number 1 above).
The bottom of the save screen contains the Save page button (shown as number 4). If you click this your changes are saved, for all to see. However, you are encouraged to fill in a description of your change in the Summary box (#2) and to say if this was just a minor change (#3).
That's it for now!
PS - The Castle has been added in now. No need to do it again!
