St Clair (II)
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
The St Clair (II),(gross tonnage 1,637) was built in 1937 and was the last steam powered vessel built for the North Company. Her maiden voyage from Leith was on 29th April 1937. She was requisitioned in WW2 and as 'Baldur' took part in the British occupation of Iceland. Post war she was converted from coal to oil-burning and resumed service on the direct Aberdeen to Lerwick run. She had a reputation as a very good sea boat. Her own steam-driven cranes were used for discharging and loading and their clanking and hissing were a notable feature of Lerwick's Victoria Pier area on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
She was renamed first as St Clair II, then St Magnus (IV) on the delivery of the St Clair (III) in 1960
