St Ninian's Bay
Shetlopedia - The Shetland Encyclopaedia
St Ninian's Bay, (HU371203), is on the west side of the South Shetland Mainland.
The bay is located on the south side of the St Ninian's Isle Tombolo, which joins St Ninian's Isle to the Mainland, at Bigton.
During the era of sail the bay was a popular anchorage, especially with French fishing vessels during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, to allow their crews rest periods. Inevitably a few of these vessels met with misfortune and wrecked there over the years, these include the Alexander in November 1793, the Manne Du Ciel in May 1892, the Sacre Coeur on May 6th 1897, the Jeune Albert in May 1902, and the Rene on June 21st 1904.
