Does anyone know what j or ij signifies, as in "ij lispund"? This is the way it appears numerous times in the original text.--Morula 17:44, 3 August 2007 (MDT)

Great stuff ;-) We should leave it as one block. We do have a Category:Statistics and I think it might be the best to add it there. If more parishes available, we should think about a subcat Historical Statistis what could be all the stuff before 1900 or so.
As to that ij I'm not sure but I have it often seen in other Scottish rentals of the 16th/17th century, esp. Orcadian. If I would be a Dutch I would think it best equals one or a. For example in the 1506 Orkney rentals it reads In butter scat ... , Inde stent ij leispund xvj merk what I read as In butter scat ... [for] the part paid in butter (stent) one lispund comes out at 16 merk [against the normal calculation of 24 merks = 1 settin or 1 lispund] ??? I think that makes sence but I'll check whether or not Thomson has more detailed info about it ... Islandhopper 18:45, 3 August 2007 (MDT)

^^^ ij = one, makes a lot of sense, as the English 'each' is more or less pronounced as 'ij' in Shetlin. Or it is at the Ness anyway. ;-)

Checked with Thomson; no specific remarks on the ij prob. He notes, that some years later in 1826 the lispund was defined at 26.625 lbs, thus the merk (mark) [of weight] was aproximately 1/2kg. Islandhopper 03:48, 4 August 2007 (MDT)

Hi, Does anyone know if these 1627 records exist for Aithsting?

Hi folk. ij means 2: Roman numerals, where the second 'i' has been written as 'j'. In the same way xviij means 18. I'm afraid there is no such 1627. record for any parish other than Nesting. There will be a new edition of the Nesting text in the forthcoming Shetland Documents 1612-1637. Brian 07:28, 12 April 2008 (MDT)
