I have a list of the boats and men lost in the desaster as a .txt-file. Sal we add to the site or do we accept the original pic of the memorial as "readable"? Islandhopper 16:44, 14 March 2007 (MDT)

Hi, I've got the complete list of boats and men from the memorial, I was going to list them like I did with the Delting Disaster. Just trying to remember how I did it... :-)
I must try to get back to Gloup when the light is better, for a better pic.
It is impossible to look at that memorial without getting emotional..

If you've forgot Robbie, I've got your teaspoon about it, I did it on boats ;-)

CHEERS, Oddrun 17:20, 14 March 2007 (MDT) , ;-)

Yup, Oddrun, Elskling, If I need help I'll call you.
Robbie 17:35, 14 March 2007 (MDT)

Robbie, when going back to the Gloup: Looking down from the car park close to the memorial to the mouth of the Gloup and then close to the farm/last building down "on the beach" there always used to be o lot of "high quality" driftwood. Might be usefull to have a pic of that in stock ... although I'm not sure for what exactly ... just a feeling ;-) Islandhopper 18:27, 14 March 2007 (MDT)

I notice one of the crew of 'Excelsior' is listed as Andrew Dushington Moar and think this should be 'Dishington', named after Rev Andrew Dishington, minister in Yell. He must have been well regarded, as quite a few Yell folk had 'Dishington' as a middle name.Heimdal 14:31, 16 March 2007 (MDT)

Thanks Heindal, changed that I remember the name. The memorial just shows "Andrew D. Moar".. I'll do a comparison read-over to see if there are any more typos. I have pics of the names on the memorial, should I post the pics on the page??
Robbie 14:46, 16 March 2007 (MDT)

I think you should post the pics with the names...,like we did ob the'Bus' , Oddrun 15:00, 16 March 2007 (MDT)

I think your table is fine as it is, but it would be good to get a clearer pic of the memorial, pity the handrail is in the way. I have found wording of an appeal for the families which was set up, if you want to use it.Heimdal 15:27, 16 March 2007 (MDT)
'Disastrous storm in Shetland'

'Relief Fund'

By the sudden and disastrous Gale of the 20th
July, 1881, The Crews of 10 Shetland Fishing
Boats, numbering Fifty-eight Men, lost their lives,
leaving about 200 persons, who were dependent
upon their exertions for their support, in a state
of destitution. To provide for the necessities of
these persons, and also, if possible, to raise a Fund,
from which immediate assistance may be afforded
in similar circumstances in the future, subscriptions
are earnestly solicited. Owing to the peculiar
dangers to which Shetland Fishermen are exposed,
such calamities are, though fortunately not to the
same extent, of annual and ordinary occurrence
throughout the Shetland Islands.

Heimdal,
The table of names was thanks to Islandhopper,, Thanks Wolfgang.!!
Heimdal, Please add that appeal details with any description you can manage.. It sounds good.
Cheers Robbie 15:56, 16 March 2007 (MDT)

I'll leave it to you to add if you want to put it in, I would probably wreck the format of the rest of the page ;-)Heimdal 16:01, 16 March 2007 (MDT)

Heimdal, I meant that he could post the pics of the names on the memorial, to the right of the names, not changhing anything, just adding..hope you understand what I mean... ;-) ooops we all are posting ,cheers, Oddrun 16:03, 16 March 2007 (MDT)

I see what you mean, Oddrun, yes, that would be fine Heimdal 16:20, 16 March 2007 (MDT)

As to the names (of men and locations): I asked Robbie for a crosscheck; my source is a handwritten list from a local predating the monument ... gosh, might be something like a historic document of its own by now ;-))) Islandhopper 16:39, 16 March 2007 (MDT)
